A New Year’s Resolution For Health

Posted in: Me Stuff

So I had sprained my leg last Wednesday. Although I attribute it to the lack of mindfulness (I was talking to Jeremy and stumbled/fell down the stairs), the sprain was a clear sign of something else.

The great thing about causality, is that something that happens (or something in general) is usually an effect, but is also a cause for something else to happen, and it can be broken down onto various scales or degrees. On a very micro scale, the thing that caused me to sprain my leg was because I stumbled and fell down the stairs. There are other causes to it, like conditional causes and so on and so forth.

So when something rather unpleasant happens, it is usually an alarm bell - an alarm bell to change. We usually react to such alarm bells, and most people, change for the worse (by hitting the Snooze button repeatedly until you realize that you’re too late, as in the late Mr/Ms/Mrs/Dr _______)

Anyways, this isn’t about you; I’m not your self-help guru today (maybe some other day), so back to me. I can blame Jeremy for talking to me, which caused me to fall, I can decide to not talk to him forever (for the erroneous belief that he caused the fall). Or, I can look elsewhere for other causes.

To cut the story short, the other causes of me spraining my left ankle includes me not being mindful, and also that my body may be physically unfit. (There is this other reasoning regarding premonitions and self-will because a day before I sprained my leg, I told Princess that my Achilles’ Heel is indeed my Achilles Heel (or rather, Tendon), but that’s another matter all together, and will discuss it another day)

Meeting Marsio from the Amazing Race Asia (and as well as the other teams), I’ve come to the decision that I’m not very fit. The brothers may be horizontally challenged (it’s not politically correct to call people fat), but they are fit - physically. Also, judging from the stamina I lack, and that I keep falling ill when it comes to exam times, I’ve come to this conclusion: I’m not that fit after all.

So from a point of view, my spraining of my leg is an alarm bell that my body isn’t in tip top condition. If a car owner would spend countless hours putting finishing touches in caring for his/her car, then so would I.

When driving, if the car goes too left, we correct it by turning the wheel right. Similarly, it’s time for me to correct my body’s physical ability. So, these are my short term New Year’s Resolution (which I never posted, because I didn’t have the time earlier):

  • Lose 10 kilos in 6 weeks.
  • Regulate sleep patterns within 3 days time
  • Exercise at least 3 times a week - swimming, not jogging randomly at 4 a.m. in the park; increase to 5 times a week after 1 month.
  • Eat properly, and proper meals, proper times. - starting today

This doesn’t seem too hard, does it? Except perhaps the losing 10 Kg in 6 weeks thing (haha, I have no Wii, but lots of grapefruit should help). Nope, not too hard - all it requires is discipline.

Discipline is required in lots of things, from your daily routine to keeping a relationship alive. Well, this is something I resolve to do. And for that, I’d have of course, the typical economic trade-off. My OTL project has to be canceled, but the Event will still be undergoing (and this means, to you team members who are reading: NO SLACKING OFF)

And of course, there is the fun part where I can psycho myself into believing that if I regulate my sleep pattern, I’d in turn affect other people to regulate their sleep patterns, including Pretty Swallow, Princess Xy and Matt Mullenwag. Because everything revolves around me. (Har har, egoistical statement here)

I’m not seeking for much, just a physically fit body (fit enough for me to join TARA2? Har har). Humans (assuming that I’m human), after all need to constantly self-improve.

Interesting… I went to college and found out that I wasn’t the only one who sprained my leg. Sim Wei sprained her leg too.

I think it’s great that you’re taking your health seriously. Most people do not really care until a big wake-up call comes along (e.g. stroke, cancer, heart attack). Good luck!

P.S. 10kgs in 6 weeks is not such a good idea, dear. When you lose so much weight so quickly, usually it’s water retention and lean muscle mass, if I’m not mistaken. Doctors recommend an average of 1kg a week.

And then there are some people who don’t care even after the wake up call comes. The snooze button is there till the person becomes late.

Hardly sudden, my friend. Everything is a chain reaction of something else. And I’ll need to build my stamina before embarking upon the journey to jog with you… you’ll jog too fast for me to catch up

[...] On my extreme roundness this year, there were few relatives whom I met who instantly commented: “Wow, Chewxy, you’re fat this year“. Some, on the other hand, are more subtle, come up with comments like: “You haven’t been exercising much have you?“. But perhaps the friendliest (or most PC) of all is: “Wah, Chewxy, looking very prosperous this year, eh?” Not that I mind… I need the exercise anyways. My target is nearly there… 2 weeks and 4 kilos gone. The bad habit of staying up late reading and snacking in the middle of the night, really gotta go. [...]
