These few days, I’ve disappeared from the face of the Earth. I’ve been busy of course. Doing what? Gaming. More specifically, I’ve been playing really old games - games I played way back some 10 years ago.
Here’s the list of retro games that I’ve enjoyed in the last week:
- Worms Armageddon
Remember those little critters with giant bazookas and concrete donkeys? Yep! They’re fun fun fun! The only problem with Worms Armageddon is with Windows XP. Windows XP does pose some problems with WA. For example, the game occasionally takes so long to load, that you’d have mistaken it for a game crash. Sometimes, the color just craps up (even with compatibility settings set to Win98). But nonetheless, when you get into the game, it’s all FUN! - Liero
Worms is turn-based. Liero, is not. It is real time, with only two worms, digging and attacking each other. Playing Liero does remind me of pre-WinXP days as well, hanging out in the school computer lab with cfgt and gang, spraying Chiquita bombs, Lapras at each other. Best of all, Liero is free, and can be downloaded here! - Earthworm Jim
While packing my stuff, I found an Earthworm Jim CD. So I popped it into my computer to play a bit. I didn’t play it much, but it was fun to see much silliness (like using his own head as a whip), but… platform games are not my thing (except Ray Man 3D on my PDA) - Tetris
Right. Enough talk about worms. I don’t like them in real life, but they’re cute on my screen. But I’m not such a big fan of annelids. I play… tetris! Do I even need to explain tetris? Nah. I play Tetris using TetriNet2. Used to play it with cfgt, but, lol, no time. Download TetriNet2 here! Oh. Besides playing tetris, I also spent some time watching Utada Hikaru play Tetris on her DS. Talk about time wasting (she’s a bloody good tetris player, btw). - Starcraft
Undoubtedly, the announcement of StarCraft II has fueled much of the renewed passion for this game. This is the only game that is LAN capable (Worms Armageddon was buggy, and nobody wanted to play LAN tetris with me), and boy, did we have so much fun with StarCraft! It’s been a while since I last played StarCraft (roughly 6-7 years ago), but I’m back! Here’s a screenshot of me trashing Abel (I was the Protoss):

The last game we played, last night… it took me only 6 minutes to finish the game! LOL. Of course, I’m not an expert on the game and Abel isn’t a total lame-ass in the game (he lasted pretty long against me - about 1 hour in a previous game), but the play I did towards Abel was a little unexpected to him. So while Abel went home to train his StarCraft, I’m gushing all over the beauty of SCII - the Protoss look so pretty! - Counter-Strike
Right. CS isn’t exactly retro. But I’ve played CS since almost 10 years ago. It’s now CS:Source now, with better physics, etc. Bah. Run-of-the-mill kill terrorist/CT
A note on StarCraft II - How come the Protoss Gateway looks so different now? And their Phase Prism looks really really suspicious - like the Zerg Queen.
Through reading the synopsis for Immortals, I can pretty much guess where the storyline is going - the Protoss dies! (unless they ressurect the Zel-Naga, which I hope they do.)
And of course, prepare for more micromanagement on StarCraft II!
Ah! Back to topic of retro gaming. What retro games do you play?
Cool?

Heh. I fooled around with Metal Gear 1 and 2 (yes, on an MSX emulator). A little bit of MGS1 and MGS2. A friend introduced me to Shining Force. I replayed FF9 during the holidays. Starcraft I replayed for a short while after the announcement. I replayed a little bit of C&C Red Alert before I came back to Australia. I always play Tetris here and there. I went back to Chrono Trigger PSX for a while, then I went back to Xenogears (also a PSX title) for another short while.
As for really old stuff, I went back and found a way (about a week or two ago) to finally install Eagle Eye Mysteries in a DOS emulator. Zzz. So, when I finally did that, I played Eagle Eye Mysteries and the sequel for a while too.
(And btw, it’s Xel’Naga. Not Z.)
Since when is starcraft retro? It’s still an on-going game! And heck, why is counterstrike retro but Half life not? I want quake and quake 2 on the list! And no Duke Nukem please. And oh, how about the old Gorrillas? The one you throw bananas around. Fallout, Baldur’s Gate, Elder Scrolls, Pagan, Prince of Persia, Mortal Kombat… the list goes on and on
It’s a list of what he played. Not every old game in existence. -_-
And I think for people like me and him, being older than a year or two already qualifies for being ancient.
Rise of Nations….
cfgt: Wow. Exhaustive list.
For a guy who is supposed to study… of course.
Ruben: LOL. Maybe I’ll have those games installed too (if they support XP)
cfgt: yep. You’re right
Ayjk: Shouldn’t you be tapping some examiner’s knee and watching their reflex action? Or you can do it House style -
We’re studying the Upper Limb this semester - I should be tapping the biceps brachii tendon instead
Of course its not lupus. Its Systemic Lupus Erythematosus - a disease caused by autoantibodies being generated against your own DNA :S
Yes. I’m well acquainted with it.
Anyone wants to get pwnt by me in StarCraft? I never knew a Zealot rush was possible.
Sure. Say bye bye when you see my six Zerglings.
One of my favourite weapons in Liero was the Cannon and the gun that sprayed green stuff which made a sort of barrier.
Replaying Starcraft again? Welcome to the club! I did the same thing here last week. Here’s another slightly old game I’ve been playing right now:
The Thing (2002-2003: PS2, XBOX, PC)
Based on the movie of the same name, the game’s events picks up after the events of the movie. It’s a third-person squad-based shooting game, where your allies are dictated by their level of trust and fear. The fun part is when they turned into Thing, gotta cook em’ with flamethrower to really kill em’. Fukken awesome, and I still love this game (played the PC version). Mininova or Piratebay might have em’.
cfgt: Huh? Only 6 Zerglings? 1 zealot can take out 4. Plus, my base should be well protected by the time you have a rush. Photon Canons pwn!
Aoshi: Heh… the green gun is nothing compared to chiquita bombs!!!!! wheee!!!
Hangmen: Thanks for the recommendation
Hohoho. Whoever said you had Zealots?
Marines can equally take out Zerglings. Or Photon Cannons
The point is that when I have Zerglings, you don’t have much of anything. Have you forgotten the speed at which a Zergling rush is forced upon you?
Yes. Within 5 minutes. But the new game is more balanced. I should have at least 1 zealot or 2 marines already
Oh well. I suppose we’ll settle the argument when you actually do arrive in Australia.
@hangmen: Freaking scary if you ask me. One minute i was checking a room, the next minute a guy following behind me turned into the Thing and killed another NPC that was following me.
Bloody awesome!
