You guys have no clue what this means for me. This [$20000 gold star] right here, means I’m going to college. I have no money put away for college right now. You guys have no clue how much this will change my life
-Greg Pheasant, 15, Nevada
If you don’t know, I DO watch Kid Nation on Ten. I’m quite surprised by the kids’ maturity. And last night, after what Greg said, I sat down to blog.
How many 15-year-olds out there have these sort of thinking? How many 15 year olds have a firm aim to get a better education for themselves? Not many.
How many 15-year-olds out there had instead wished themselves to have fun fun fun when they grow up? Indeed, how many 15-year-olds even thought about what they want to do when they were older?
Then again, how many paths diverged? When I was 15, I wanted to be a physicist. To study space and time. I read any and every physics material I could grab my grubby little fingers on. Now, I love economics to bits. I still love physics. I still read Cosmic Variance. But also I love economics.
See how paths diverge (well, not really, since mainstream economics is rather analogous to physics, and heteredox economics can be seen as an analogue to chemistry)?
I guess the main important difference between Greg and I when I was 15, was that I had no concept of money (or rather, the concept of big money). I guess, now I do (bills suck. They really really suck). Greg has. I suppose he knows the value of $20k, and what it means. If you were to give me $20k when I was 15, I’d probably start up a company and bring it down crashing due to lack of managerial skills. I had no concept of investment in human capital. Now I do.
Life is thus. We learn.
What did you want to be when you were 15?
Cool?

When I was 15… I left school to study hospitality and discovered I hated it, before that since I was 4 I wanted to be a lawyer, but now my love is english and I’m still looking for the right path for me. Currently working on a tv series pilot, life varies so much…
Ah.. yes. The only thing constant in life is inevitable change
I wanted 1. world peace, 2. no more children living in poverty and 3. a gameboy
when i was 12, i wanted to become a scientist, to explore about things and mysteries, the genome code fascinated me a lot and the workings of the brain intrigued me - probably due to reading a lot of national geographic
when i was 15, i wanted to become a gamer due to the influences that i had at the time - frequent visits to cyber cafes and my attitude of always wanting to be competent in things i did.
when i was 16, things turned, i wanted to find life
so now i dream to be a psychologist xd
Alan:
You dreamt of world peace when you were 15? I had never wanted a game console until I was about 17.
Moony:
Great! Let’s get psycho together. LOL. You can keep providing me with psychological insights to economic activities
When I was 7, I wanted to be a writer, a fashion designer or a lawyer. When I was 10, I decided I wanted to be rich.
Now, at 19, I still want to be rich. So I’m doing accounting. I’m planning to write a book. Eventually, I plan to start my own business dabbling in fashion, make up, skin care and fragrances. And the way I drive, I’m going to eventually need a lawyer.
See. Classic Taurean traits.
Ya. That’s why you’re always so interesting
Ah ha. When I was 15, I had no direction whatsoever.
cfgt: At 15, our entire class (you included) had plans to go to uni. LOL. At least we had that general direction. Some kids I talk to have absolutely no directions. At all.
But I’m glad that come 2008, we have a straight direction. LOL.
When I was 15, I dreamed of having becoming an interior designer. I would draw stuff nice interior concept of my dream home. It never really took off though.
hmm, when I was 15, I wanted to a scientist in Nanotechnology, at17 I wanted to be rich, now I still want to be rich, but I want to be a banker.
Zybler:
Thank goodness. Shared vision. Remember that. Shared vision.
JX:
You sure you don’t want to do that nanotech ice thing you talked about? That would be so cool
To travel the world. Still working on it…
I reckon you’ve seen more of the world than I have. Bummer.
When I was 15… i wanted to come to the states for college…and i made it
I wanted to be an engineer. Lolz… and that’s what I’m studying right now.
when i was 15, i was hatching a plan to destroy my brother’s life.. and yep.. still working on it. =)
…i wanted to utterly crush the miserable wretch of a teacher that i had. LOL.
~hashie
Funnily enough, I think my dream now is still to become a game designer. LOL.
[…] Jan 07 Talking about Direction By cfgtAdd commentsGeneral Reading this post and the question posed by Chewxy was ratherintriguing to me then, and still intriguing to me now. A few months ago, I posed my friends this simple yet profound question - where do you see all of us 5 years from now and 10 years from now. […]
cfgt>> I wanted to do that too. Too bad there were family objections.
Yiren:
Yep. Congrats!
Aoshi:
Great! Congrats!
Yh:
Not worth it, my dear. You know I can and WILL turn the tables.
Hashie:
Plan unsuccessful I reckon.
cfgt:
Shared vision. Keep the shared vision.
