Random Complaints

On Bad Data
I laughed/cried myself to sleep last night over this:

Bad Data

It was funny. And sad at the same time. I actually post this up for cfgt to see, since I’m likely to be sleeping when he wakes up.

Bleh, totally not normal (Jarque-berra proves its way too skewed and kurt - by 45 million times! LOL!). Last time I’ll open my gob and bet that the data is normal.

Okay okay.. this data looks bad from a first look, but this also tells me something - too much data isn’t good. Instead, what I did was to split up the data into 3 (going to try 5) distinct groups, and within each distinct group, the price is normal. Hah!

On Culture
Its weird that being Asian doesn’t quite allow you to show off your ‘exotic’ culture anymore. 30 years ago, George Lucas can make something esoteric out of a Japanese movie. Today, if something Asian (or any culture for that matter) inspires something, a major part of the world would already know where it came from, hence losing its lustre.

So far we have come down the road of globalization. It’s curiously interesing.

On Web2.0
I’ve got many rants and raves about Web2.0, plenty of things, ranging from Mike Arrington to how to successfully game Techmeme (ah, yes, I think I may have figured out how Techmeme works), but I keep them generally to myself.

I’m stil very much connected to the internet and its continual progress. :D . Stay tuned.
On Programming
I think my skillz0rs are coming back. I’m hacking away at even more code now. LOL. Yay me. I love Python. Just ‘import antigravity’ and you’ll fly! (hah! I bet only long time xkcd readers recognize this reference)
On Random Numbers
I was working late last night on with some random numbers. And I was considering using the Yuzoz API for a simulation program that I’m running (that’s where my Price data above came from). Then I dozed off on my chair. I had a quite interesting dream -

I was sitting on my chair, and then my room dissolved away right into outer space. But instead of stars, I see numbers running - specifically, the lines being echo’d on my Python console. And then I saw it - it came and gone in a flash. I saw (and for a moment, understood) the algorithm for the world’s randomness.

Yes, in my dream, all the genuine, true random numbers that you collect using hardware, or from outer space (like Yuzoz), is actually pseudo random - there is a complicated algorithm to that! And I saw the algorithm that generates all the random noise that we deem to be genuinely random. And yes, there was a seed too.

And then I woke up.

In the meantime, news of 1 new competitor has sprung up overnight. They have a superior engine. Hopefully less than ours
