What language do you dream in?
I usually dream in English. Occasionally I dream in other languages. For example, if I do happen to watch a Japanese drama before I sleep, I’ll dream in Japanese, and wake up the next morning only to gain the temporary ability to speak Japanese. It lasts for about 20 minutes only though.
These are the languages I dream in:
- English (about 98% of the time)
- Mandarin
- Japanese (thanks to the crazy amount of J-dramas I watch)
- Cantonese
- Hokkien
Also, I once did a very interesting experiment - that was to record my own sleeptalk. Apparently I dream of techy stuff quite a lot (a lot of sum of errors squared, ciphers, locks and stuff). Also, quite a bit on money. And of course, no dream of mine is complete without her (I did wean off a bit though in the past few months). And when I was watching Liar Game, a lot of my sleep talk involved being methods of conning people.. in Nihongo naturally.
So… this morning, I woke up to my housemates talking outside, and the TV being turned on. I dreamt in Mandarin last night (a large part of the dream involved me being scolded by her mother for not taking care of her - weird, because her mother usually speaks Cantonese).
Anyways, when I woke up, the people outside my room sounded like they were speaking Italian. I knew it couldn’t be right, because none of my housemates spoke Italian (they speak English, Mandarin, Hmong, Japanese, French… none Italian). I knew they had to be speaking English, because one girl is American and she can’t speak any other language than English (and French).
But it sounded like Italian. In fact, everyone sounded like they were speaking Italian. It took more than half an hour before my brain settled down from the Mandarin dream when their language became English again. And when the languages transformed, they actually sort of warbled in my ears.
This leads me to one conclusion: I have a babelfish in my ear. Hope I never get exposed to Vogon poetry. Har har!
Now, what language do you dream in?
Cool?

Heh, I took a semester of Italian. Hated it, so pretty much the only thing I remember is ‘come stai?’, ‘va bene!’ and ‘casa’ lol. Oh and I think lattes are only meant for in the morning so it’s odd when foreigners ask for it later on in the day.
…Yes, I have too much time on my hands.
And anyway, I think it’s obvious what language I dream in… when I actually get to dream (been too long, wtf? maybe it’s the meds).
Is there any way to dream more? The non-nightmare type お願いしま~す。
Languages? I don’t remember speaking any language in dreams. As far as I can recall, everyone is telepathic. Or at the very least, I am telepathic.
Although I have no idea how I read signs, I know what they are. I get somewhat of an impression of what the sign says, but not what the sign actually says.
Liss: You really dream in nihongo eh?
cfgt: ooooooh… *twilight zone theme*
I have to agree with cfgt…I think I dream in English but somehow I understand what all the other characters are saying telepathically…
Yup, Japanese for a few years now. Although generally only one group speaks Japanese and the other party responds in English (aka I speak Japanese and the people I speak to will reply in English, or vice versa).
The telepathic ‘general understanding’ thing is definitely part of dreams.
One weird one: I literally slipped out of a dream. In the dream, I felt myself slipping over (as in feet coming from underneath me) and then I woke up and was on my back. Normally it’s the *bang!* wake up but not that time…
ayjk: Are they telepathically talking to you in English? (Oh wait, you only speak English)
Liss: Benazir Bhutto. I didn’t get to freak you out with that. :(. I think the slipping out of a dream is a common thing. I mean, most people wake up only when they feel that they have impacted in their dreams, but if you woke up prior to impact, it typically means you’re lucid dreaming - meaning you knwo you’re in a dream…
How can you freak me out about Bhutto? I was the one who dreamt about her…
And Malay and a smattering of Cantonese…
Liss: Yea… I was thinking of re-creating your dream in real life. LOL. Too bad. I forgot.
Ayjk: Cantonese is a dialect. And why would you need to speak malay? >.< (though I must admit you still have fantastic malay writing skillz0rs)

So is it a language or dialect now?
ps sorry for being so pedantic. I am very tired studying about inflammation at the moment.
Your brain is unable to process information immediately. Your ram is dying har har
What? American girl speaks French to who? I hardly dream and if I do it is soundless LOL! Whenever I dream it must be the death of people who close to me, sad right. Only illustration and symbols argh!
My sociology lecturer once mentioned that your first language is the language you speak in your dreams. Haha unrelated but here’s that comment you’ve wanted so badly!

Ayjk: It’s a language when I use it. It gets degraded into a dialect when others use it
Coffeeholic: There is only one american chick in my house. And its more like my brain’s got an overactive RAM
Hashie: Not really. I speak a lot.
I didn’t know people can dream in different languages. That’s pretty cool.
start speaking more languages.
Am I the only one who dream in gibberish? Seriously.
It is only gibberish if you allow it to be. Ever dreamt in gobbledegook (that’s turkey-speak)?
I dreamt I was a bird; soared upon thermals and drifted along crosswinds.
When you can fly; who needs words.
you just be…
Um.. right
Don’t tell anyone that I can fly. I appreciate that.
You actually have to fly?
LOL. Not all people like teleporation. Some people think of too many places at once and they get split
