I should be asleep. I have a job interview tomorrow. But watching the Big Bang Theory stirred the inner geek, and Bloggck’s dastardly tactics ended in utter failure.
Last night’s Big Bang Theory featured a game called Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock, invented by Sam Kass – with hilarious results. Here’s a quick explanation of RPSSL by Sam . . . → Read More: Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock

So, economists think consumer make their purchases rationally, and that they make their decisions based on past behaviour and expectations of the future.
I put that claim to the test, with the sample size of 1 – me. For the past 20 weeks or so, I’ve been making grocery runs every Saturday. I only do my groceries once a week, since I am fairly capable of gauging my expectations with regards to what I want to eat for the week.
I base my diet on staples – there is a set amount of carbs, proteins and veges I eat each week. Because the amount of veges I eat is embarassingly dwindling (I eat a lot during the beginning of the semester, and less and less as time goes on), and my protein intake is relatively fluctuant to my desires at the time of purchase (i.e. if I feel like eating a meat on Saturday, I will buy meat for the rest of the week, even though there will be some days I totally do not like to eat meat). So, the only data I analyzed is my weekly carbohydrate purchases.
There are primarily 4 forms of carbs that I buy – bread, Indomie, instant noodles and pasta. I also buy and eat plenty of rice, but rice is unquantifiable (it actually is, but rice isn’t as instant as eating bread or instant noodles). So, how did I fare?

Pretty horrible graph isn’t it? Not only it tells nothing about my spending habits, it also looks bad to begin with. So, let’s look at some numbers instead. Continue reading Groceries by Expectation

For Star Wars Fans Who Love Economics, i.e. me:
What good is all your uncle’s work if the Empire takes it over? You know they’ve already started to nationalize commerce in the central systems? It won’t be long before your uncle is just a tenant, slaving for the greater glory of the Empire!

So… I went to the market today – I can hear you gasping already (something along the lines of “OMG CHEWXY GOES TO THE MARKET?”). And it was crowded. That’s all about markets and crowds. So there.

YesIt’s been a while since I last posted a desktop picture (the last time, I posted a picture of the dining table. Previous times were of my desk back in Malaysia). I realize I haven’t posted pictures of my current desk, so here it is:

So, I found out today that Canada has 2 other currencies (3 if you count their Tire Dollars) floating around other than the Canadian Dollar. They are the Calgary Dollar and the Toronto Dollar. Strangely enough, because they are private currencies, they are on par (i.e. have the same value) with Canadian Dollars. So, that’s rather pointless, no?
That got cfgt and I thinking, what if, Australia would have its own city-based currency? Assuming they’re all legal tender, and government sanctioned, it doesn’t have to be on par with AUD anymore. So, using production output (and general wealth) we would have this value sequence: Continue reading City Dollars

My friends and I had a game of Monopoly just 2 nights ago. It was a fast and fun game, but I wasn’t satisfied with the game at all. It didn’t give me any stimulation.

The end state of the game on Saturday.
