I Am A Lousy Housemate. AMA

This is one of those My Desk posts – simply because I love showing off my desk. I am a lousy housemate. When I study, I am like the Zerg. I start out from one location, and move to another, with my notes sprawling all over the place. Here’s a photo of my house before I . . . → Read More: I Am A Lousy Housemate. AMA

Competing Laziness

So I stumbled upon an old class photo, and I mentioned to cfgt that our high school class was filled with overachievers. It seemed everyone was doing a tough degree, with the exception of Chewxy, who’s doing economics which was an easy degree (add to the fact that I’m planning to do my honors year in microeconomics, somewhere in the game theory field, which is the easy part of economics).

Here’s the ensuing laziness competition that followed: Continue reading Competing Laziness

Random Update

I recently got myself a new Ubuntu machine. I must give thanks to Tou too. Tou’s two computers were about to be junked, so I took one (the IBM one was a little trashed up to even run Ubuntu). So, I took it and installed Ubuntu on it. Here’s the result.

The Week That Was

Let’s have a look back at the week that was, for me…

Busy!!
I had 2 exams on monday, Game Theory and Advanced Macroeconomics. GT was very doable, while I think I may have failed my Macro exam (who the hell thinks of why rich countries are rich and why poor countries are poor anyways?1).

Then Zybler and I were going thru our project, and we discussed something that could really be improved. And I’ve been coding since Tuesday night.

Sleep
Let’s see how much I slept this week:

  • Sunday – 0 hours (studying for 2 exams)
  • Monday – 8 hours (good rest after 2 exams)
  • Tuesday – 4 hours
  • Wednesday – 0 hours (Zybler talked about something really interesting, and I sat down to do it)
  • Thursday – 0 hours (still working on that bit of improvement)
  • Friday – 8 hours (crashed from not sleeping – split into 3 hours (7-10 a.m ), 1 hour (12 – 1 p.m), 4 hours sleep (4 – 8 p.m), and I spent the whole day in bed, watching movies)
  • Saturday – 3 hours

That leads up to an average of ~4 hours sleep daily. Hah. And look at my bloodshot eyes:

On Randomness

I know, I know, I haven’t been blogging for a few days already. Don’t sue me.. I’m extremely busy nowadays with school, and various projects…

Few people have asked me why I like Lucky Star. Well, for one, it very much mimicks my conversations in real life (yes, I talk about Chocolate Coronets, and I dare you to tell me you haven’t played a game that was meant for a more mature audience when you were still young. Ahem.. GTA?)

I guess, that’s what’s so interesting about randomness (and yes, I know Lucky Star was shown last year). Now, here’s a slice of the random conversations I get into (and ooh, it has annotations!):

A Couple of Reviews and More

This article started as a review of Iron Man, but I had a writer’s block midway through, and couldn’t complete the review. So I’m gonna talk about a few things as well. :D Continue reading A Couple of Reviews and More

Few Things Into One

I deleted yesterday’s post because obviously I was in no right mind to post it. So, instead, today I’ll post a few of my intended posts into short, condensed posts. All in one. And stop asking me to use Twitter.

On The Logic of Life
I mentioned I bought the Logic of Life previously. I finished reading it in an intercity transit train. Here’s what I think of it:Logic of Life Cover

  • It’s a good read.
  • Harford is proposing a Gladwellian ‘blink’ argument for Rationality.
  • He argues that we are all rational, without consciously being rational.
  • You best read some basic economic books, because Tim writes and assumes everyone knows what Asymmetric Information, or Moral Hazard is.
  • The Logic of Life could also be titled Rationality, From Their Point of View.
  • The feel of the whole book is like reading Rationality 101 (to non-economics students)
  • This Rationality is not the common Homo Economicus argument of human rationality. It’s… the hidden rationality of things, I’d say.
  • Has PLENTY of quotable quotes
  • I recommend it to anyone interested in human rationality.
  • And whoever designed the book cover (not this one on the left) needs to be fired.

On CJ7
In the same post, I also mentioned I watched CJ7. Here’s what I think of it:CJ7 Poster Small

  • E.T-like, for the Hong Kong audience
  • UnE.T-like for the world audience
  • Not a typical Stephen Chow movie – very few instances of mou lei tau (nonsensical) scenes.
  • Story is bland.
  • But Story is original.
  • It’s a father-son story. Little girl is a good actress.
  • CGI usage is omnipresent, but very very very subtle.
  • Stephen Chow hasn’t quite learnt to capture the audience’s emotions (like Steven Spielberg. That man ALWAYS captures the audience)
  • I see this as a maturing act of Stephen Chow’s directorial efforts.
  • He dares to move away from what he’s familiar with.
  • 6/10 – watch it for his effort.
  • Read Swifty’s review of CJ7 for more information.
